Several analysts have published reports with their calculations and prognosis of small cell shipments recently. Some were released quietly, and with strong headlines. sony ericsson play We have looked behind the hype and talked to a few people in the industry to come up with a considered view.
Informa sony ericsson play publishing a quarterly "State of the Nation" report for small cell community. It is available free to download and display the current network operators offering commercial services. Dimitris Mavrakis, senior analyst at Informa and work with the data forecasting team predicted a total of 6.6 million sony ericsson play small cells would be installed by the end of 2012. Simon Saunders quoted a figure of 3.8 million deployed today (speaking of small cell World Summit last month) indicates significant growth during the year.
Meanwhile, ABI Research more cautious in its latest Enterprise Femtocells and Consumer Report predicts 5.3 million added by the end of the year. They estimate sony ericsson play that 2012 shipments would match last year, to about 2.4 million. Their breakdown analysis encompasses both revenue than just numbers.
Over at Infonetics enhances sony ericsson play Richard Webb believes that revenues are static, but points to significant cost reductions. In Q1 2012 shipments increased by 14% while revenue dipped by 2.7%. This corresponds to a much lower cost per unit, which should help boost growth in the future.
Airvana climbed to the top of the leaderboard in the femtocell revenue. It is emphasized that the cost of these units is much higher than for UMTS, and uptake in the U.S. continues to be strong. This is partly due to the additional complexity in a CDMA femtocell. However, the large investments that silicon vendors UMTS system-on-a-chip femtocells dramatically reduced their costs.
Sprint has taken a strong line with femtocells for many years, is the first to distribute them commercially, and continues to promote them heavily. Verizon, the other major CDMA network in the U.S., has been much quieter about their solution. They offer Samsung femtocells to dissatisfied sony ericsson play customers who may leave their network, but does not actively promote them. Because I believe that Verizon is Samsung's sony ericsson play only customer and that Sprint just buy Airvana (and some Ubee / Airwalk) femtocells, it suggests that Verizon distributes a lot.
